RIP_ALEX_EN

With the deepest sorrow and a heavy heart, the team of the Bulgaria Analytica lets you know the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Center for Balkan and Black Sea Studies, a friend and a partner passed away in the early hours of the 28th of July, 2019. His legacy will live in time as his work, analyses, commentaries, presentations, interviews, lectures will continue to serve as a guide for the current and future generations of readers. He was a true son of his father, Rayko Alexiev, who was tortured to death by the totalitarian regime in Bulgaria. After years of repression, he fled Bulgaria in 1968 and settled in the US, where he had a remarkable life, starting with his graduation from the University of California, Los Angeles and work for the Hudson Institute, the Rand Corporation and the Department of the Defense in a senior advisory role. He was a member of the famous “B” team that won the debate on US policy on countering Soviet Russia, which led to a shift in President Jimmy Carter’s agenda toward the Soviet Union and later on President Ronald Reagan’s tough line, ultimately leading to the demise of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Alex Alexiev returned to his country of birth after the fall of the Berlin wall and became a senior advisor to the first Prime Minister who belonged to the opposition to the Communist Party – Philip Dimitrov. He spent the last 8 years of his life commuting between his home base in California and Bulgaria. He dedicated his heart and all his time to the Center for Balkan and Black Sea Studies and the Bulgaria Analytica project. He will be sorely missed by the team and by the readers. His insight and intellectual prowess were only matched by his devotion to help readers navigate through the risks and challenges of life.
