The main question after strikes on Syria: How does Russia respond?

The U.S. launched cruises missiles at a Syrian military airfield in response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians that has been blamed on the Assad regime. A Washington Post piece notes that Russia now has air defense systems in Syria that are capable of shooting down U.S. planes, and any strike on a Syrian military target could cause Russian military casualties because Moscow has troops intermingled with Assad’s forces. This leaves U.S. President Trump in a tricky position, particularly if he wants to continue his primary foreign policy objective of defeating the Islamic State.
