Thousands protest in Moscow against housing resettlement plan

Thousands of Muscovites took to the streets of the Russian capital Sunday to protest a plan to force millions of Moscow residents out of the shoddy Soviet-era apartment blocks in which they are living and resettle them in modern flats, Reuters reports. Protesters have raised concerns about property rights, the location and quality of the planned new apartments, a lack of services and infrastructure and the proposed demolition of historic parts of the city. Putin approves of the resettlement plan, but he has asked the Moscow government not to violate citizens’ rights.
