US approves proposed Patriot sale to Romania

The U.S. State Department approved the proposed sale of seven Patriot air defense systems to Romania in a deal that could cost $3.9 billion, Balkan Insight reports. The U.S. Congress and the Romanian parliament must still approve the deal. Romania is currently in the process of increasing its defense budget and modernizing its military, though efforts to do so are moving slowly under Romania’s Social Democrat-controlled government.
