Turkish coup was blessing for Erdogan

A piece penned in EU Observer by Turkish journalist Selcuk Gultasli explains the July 15, 2106 coup attempt in Turkey was ill thought out, but the Turkish government’s post-coup attempt crackdown was well prepared, even prior to the botched putsch taking place. One year later, western¬†intelligence agencies are skeptical the coup attempt was ordered solely by Fethullah Gulen, as Erdogan claims. While numerous questions remain as to what actually transpired, there is somewhat of a consensus in the West that the coup attempt was led by a¬†coalition of Kemalists, opportunists, secularists and Gulenists.
