Turkish coup was blessing for Erdogan

A piece penned in EU Observer by Turkish journalist Selcuk Gultasli explains the July 15, 2106 coup attempt in Turkey was ill thought out, but the Turkish government’s post-coup attempt crackdown was well prepared, even prior to the botched putsch taking place. One year later, western intelligence agencies are skeptical the coup attempt was ordered solely by Fethullah Gulen, as Erdogan claims. While numerous questions remain as to what actually transpired, there is somewhat of a consensus in the West that the coup attempt was led by a coalition of Kemalists, opportunists, secularists and Gulenists.
