Erdogan backs death penalty on Turkey coup attempt anniversary

In a pair of speeches that included Muslim prayer and Qur’anic verses on betrayal, martyrdom and standing ground in front of enemies, Erdogan vowed to “cut the heads off” traitors, The Guardian reports. In response to Erdogan saying he would restore the death penalty if the Turkish parliament approves it, European Commission Chief Jean-Claude Juncker reiterated his warning that doing so would end any hope of Turkey joining the EU.
