Heads roll at top of Turkey’s military

With the trial of nearly 500 alleged coup plotters underway, Erdogan replaced the heads of the Turkish army, navy and air force. Turkey’s chief of the General Staff, Hulusi Akar, survived the shake-up, but an Al-Monitor piece predicts he will soon be replaced by incoming army chief Yasar Guler, a ferocious opponent of Fethullah Gulen and advocate of Turkish military intervention in Syria. According to the Al-Monitor piece, Guler’s rise is a sign that Kemalist, or secular, credentials are no longer what is needed to ascend the ranks of the Turkish military. Rather unswerving loyalty to Erdogan and overt Islamic piety appears to be the new formula for success.
