171 journalists behind bars in Turkey: Main opposition CHP report

There are currently 171 Turkish journalists in jail in Turkey, and 187 media outlets have been shut down in the country in recent years, according to a report compiled by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Hurriyet Daily News reports. The CHP produced the report at the conclusion of its “Arrested Journalists and Shuttered Media Outlets Workshop,” which took place late last month during the party’s “Justice Congress.” The congress followed a “Justice March” from Ankara to Istanbul following the sentencing of CHP lawmaker Enis Berberoglu to 25 years in prison for providing a newspaper with video footage of Turkish intelligence transporting weapons to Syria.
