During Zapad 2017, Russia’s large military exercise in Belarus that begins on Thursday, the fictional state of “Veishnoria” will seek to invade and sow discord between Moscow and Minsk, RFE/RL reports. In addition to disclosing the scenario of the military drills, Moscow and Minsk released a map showing Veishnoria located in northwest Belarus and two other fictional states on the territory of Poland and Lithuania. Some analysts note Veishnoria has been placed in an area where support for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is suspect. In the past, Zapad exercises have simulated nuclear strikes on Poland in 2009 and Sweden in 2013. Moscow and Minsk say 13,000 soldiers will be participating in this year’s drills on Sept. 14-20, but some in the West expect as many as 100,000 troops to be involved.
