Turkey, Iraq to launch joint military exercise near border

A day following the Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum, Ankara and Baghdad are launching a joint military exercise on the Turkey-Iraq border, Hurriyet Daily News reports. Ankara says the exercise will begin at the Habur border gate, which serves as Iraqi Kurdistan’s main access point to the outside world. Additionally, the area lies in close proximity to northeastern Syrian territory controlled by the Kurdish YPG militia and southeastern Turkish territory, where Ankara has an ongoing military operation against the PKK.
