Erdogan: Iraqi Kurds must give up on independence or go hungry

Ramping up his rhetoric against Iraqi Kurdistan, Erdogan gave a speech Tuesday in which he said, “”It will be over when we close the oil taps, all [their] revenues will vanish, and they will not be able to find food when our trucks stop going to northern Iraq,” the BBC reports. Over the first half of 2017, cross-border trade between Turkey and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region was worth approximately $5 billion. On Monday, 72% of the 5.2 million Kurds and non-Kurds registered in the areas where the independence referendum was held reportedly participated in the vote. The results of the independence referendum are still pending.
