Fresh harsh rhetoric directed at US by Erdogan sends Turkish lira back down

Erdogan unleashed a tirade at the U.S. on Thursday, blaming American ambassador to Turkey John Bass for the ongoing spat between Ankara and Washington and the tit-for-tat visa services suspensions, bne IntelliNews reports. Erdogan also attacked Washington over American pastor Andrew Brunson, who is detained in Turkey, and Mehmet Hakan Atilla, the deputy general manager of Turkish state-owned lender Halkbank, who is in detention in the U.S. on charges of infringing sanctions against Iran. The Turkish president went on to say Turkish police would no longer use U.S.-made Sig Sauer weapons as retaliation for Washington canceling weapon sales to Erdogan’s bodyguards. All of the harsh rhetoric resulted in the lira declining in value again, falling to more than 3.65 to the dollar.
