Retired Turkish general Haldun Solmazturk said the chances of Ankara going ahead and actually purchasing the Russian S-400 missile system stand at “even less than 10%.” A bne IntelliNews piece also states that, while Erdogan recently announced Turkey signed an agreement and already made a down payment on the missile system, Ankara’s final decision on purchasing the S-400 could be affected by U.S. sanctions or Washington could even block the delivery of newly developed F-35 jets to Turkey. Likewise, Erdogan has the wiggle room of being able to back out of the deal with Russia, claiming as a pretext that Moscow is unwilling to transfer required technology.
