Thousands of Russian private contractors fighting in Syria

As Putin proclaims victory in Syria, the AP runs a piece revealing thousands of Russians are fighting in Syria as private contractors. Moscow appears to be using a shadowy, private military contractor known as Wagner to secretly deploy Russians to Syria in order to keep Russia’s official death toll low. The Russian Defense Ministry says 41 of its troops have died in Syria, but Russian investigative groups estimate at least 73 private contractors have died in the war-torn country. Russian private contractors are now expected to remain in Syria to guard oil and gas fields under a contract between the Syrian government and a Russian business with ties to the Kremlin.
