Erdogan calls U.S. Iran-sanctions case ‘political coup attempt’ against him

Erdogan condemned the recent conviction of Turkish Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla in the Iran sanctions-busting case, claiming it was a “political coup attempt” against Turkey’s government, RFE/RL reports. Erdogan also said the case was a joint effort by the CIA and FBI to undermine him. During the trial held in New York, U.S. prosecutors and witnesses accused Turkish bank and government officials of taking bribes and participating in a scheme to help Tehran launder $1 billion in oil revenues through the U.S. banking system. One witness said Erdogan aided the plot. Meanwhile, Erdogan claimed U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethuallah Gulen was aiding the prosecution.
