Russia approves warplane deployment on disputed island near Japan

Moscow is increasing its militarization of the disputed Kuril Islands off the coast of Japan with PM Dmitry Medvedev signing a decree allowing the Russian military to use a civilian airport on the the island of Iturup for its warplanes, Reuters reports. The island was one of four seized by Soviet forces at the end of World War II, and due to the Kuril Islands dispute, Moscow and Tokyo still have not signed a peace treaty to mark the end of the war. Russia recently deployed some of its newest missile defense systems to the islands and has plans to build a naval base there as well.
