Bne IntelliNews runs a piece listing reasons why Erdogan may or may not call early elections — moving forward the presidential and parliamentary votes scheduled for November 2019. Erdogan has recently secured the support of the nationalist MHP, rewritten Turkish election rules and drummed up support over going to war with the Kurds in Syria, creating speculation he may be preparing to call early elections. Also, by calling early elections, he could preempt the potential fallout from a possible economic downturn or AKP defeat in local elections scheduled for next March. However, Erdogan also wants to maintain his image of strength, and calling local elections could be a sign of weakness. Likewise, Erdogan could use the next year and a half to come up with new tricks to ensure his victory in the election.
