US postpones fresh sanctions on Russia, Kremlin retaliation options limited

Despite U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley saying Washington would impose fresh sanctions targeting Russia’s defence sector, particularly companies linked to chemical weapons production, the Trump Administration postponed the new round of sanctions to the “near future,” following last weekend’s airstrikes in Syria. Meanwhile, Russia’s State Duma has tabled a bill proposing counter sanctions, bne IntelliNews reports. Analysts say the proposed counter sanctions would harm Russian companies more than the U.S. targets and would wreck local economies in Russian regions where affiliates of American firms are major employers.
