2,000 Turkish Jews apply for Portuguese citizenship

In an interview with Hurriyet Daily News, Portuguese Ambassador to Turkey Paula Leal da Silva said about 2,000 Turkish Jews have applied for Portuguese citizenship since Portugal adopted a law two years ago that grants nationality to the descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in the 15th Century. Da Silva estimates there are 17,000 Sephardic Jews currently living in Turkey.
