An EU Observer investigation finds Kosovo and Albanian nationals are still trying to sneak into Western Europe, veering off through Romania in the aftermath of Hungary fencing off its border with Serbia. Over the past couple years, Romanian border police have detained 148 Kosovan citizens and 95 Albanians for illegal border crossings. Once the migrants from Kosovo get detained, things get interesting, as Romania does not recognize Kosovo as a country and sends many of the migrants who get caught back to Serbia. Then, Belgrade is faced with a dilemma since deporting the migrants back to Kosovo or sticking them in refugee camps could amount to de facto recognition of Kosovo’s independence. Sources suggest Belgrade is content with letting ethnic Albanians flee Kosovo and is going to keep letting them cross the Serbian-Romanian border.
