Erdogan names son-in-law to lead Turkey’s finance ministry

Amid a restructuring of ministries in Turkey, Erdogan named his son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, to head Turkey’s powerful new treasury and finance ministry, the Financial Times reports. Albayrak, who formerly served as energy minister, toes Erdogan’s line of claiming the Turkish lira has been plunging as a result of an “operation” of “overseas origins.” Albayrak’s appointment to his new post was met with alarm from analysts and foreign investors who are anxious over the state of the Turkish economy and a potential takeover of monetary policy by Erdogan.
