NATO invites Macedonia to join alliance

Macedonia is in line to become NATO’s 30th member state, following a decision by leaders of the alliance to begin accession talks with Skopje, Reuters reports. In order for the accession process to play out, though, Macedonian citizens must approve of Skopje’s deal with Athens that would rename their country “North Macedonia.” NATO leaders previously invited Macedonia to join the alliance in 2008, but the move was blocked by Greece over the name dispute. NATO’s new decision to welcome Macedonia comes as Athens is expelling two Russian diplomats over suspected involvement in rallies in Greece against the Macedonian name deal. Moscow objects to Macedonia joining NATO.
