China’s Belt and Road initiative finds shaky ground in Eastern Europe

A Stratfor piece analyzes the prospects of China forging strong economic and security ties with Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road initiative. The analysis suggests the standoff between the West and Russia in the region will complicate China’s efforts in the three Eastern European countries, and Beijing may end up sticking to playing an economic role and deferring to Moscow on security matters. The piece notes, though, that Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova are incentivized to strengthen their ties with China because that will give them more leeway in negotiating the clash between the West and Russia.
