Russian military games on Dniester anger Moldova

Russian soldiers in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria began their third yearly joint war games with the local separatist troops, Balkan Insight reports. The joint military exercise is simulating an attack on the Dniester River, the de facto border between Moldova and Transnistria. The drills involve troops and military vehicles entering the river and crossing the de facto border. Analysts say this is an attempt by Moscow to flex its muscle in the region and deter Moldova, as well as Ukraine. Chisinau is protesting the military exercise, saying it violates agreements between Moldova, Transnistria and Russia.
