Beijing’s BRI push will increase anti-China sentiments: Russian media

An Economic Times article comments on Russian media, for the first time, reporting critically on China’s Belt and Road initiative. Leading Russian daily Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported anti-China sentiment is on the rise in Central Asia and that many people in Central Asian countries believe the Belt and Road Initiative exhibits Beijing’s intention to occupy Central Asia. The report also claims there is rampant corruption involved in the initiative, with the Chinese handing envelopes filled with cash to local Central Asian officials in order to solve tax and regulatory problems. It appears Moscow is increasingly viewing the Belt and Road Initiative as competing with Russia’s Eurasian Economic Union for influence in the region.
