Turkey considering a permanent naval base in Northern Cyprus

As Turkey is engaged in a power struggle in the Eastern Mediterranean with Russia, as well as with a Greek Cypriot, Israel, Greece and Egypt bloc, and at a time in which there is unprecedented military naval concentration and activity in the region — largely due to Syria and a battle over hydrocarbon reserves — Ankara is discussing the possibility of establishing a permanent naval base in Northern Cyprus. An Al-Monitor article states this would further escalate existing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
