Patriarch’s Ukraine bombshell will echo in the Balkans

A Balkan Insight piece states an independent Church of Ukraine will likely be here to stay, but the Russian Orthodox Church, with immense political and financial resources and the backing of the Serbian and Bulgarian churches, plans to challenge the Ecumenical Patriarch in Istanbul, who happens to be sitting in the hostile territory of Islamist Turkey where just a few thousand Orthodox believers remain. Meanwhile, the decision to grant the Ukrainian Orthodox Church independence from Moscow is pitting Orthodox churches in the Balkans against one another and is raising questions about the aspirations for autocephaly in Macedonia, Montenegro and Moldova.
