Ukrainian activist Kateryna Gandziuk dies following acid attack

Civic activist and local council member from Kherson, Ukraine, Kateryna Gandziuk, died Sunday in a Kiev hospital a few months following an acid attack that left her with severe burns to her head and body, the Kyiv Post reports. The July 31 attack, in which an unknown man splashed a liter of battery acid on Gandziuk’s head, is believed to be linked to Gandziuk’s activism, including her efforts to expose corruption in Kherson. The incident was one of series of attacks on activists in Ukraine this year. As Gandziuk lay in hospital beds over the last few months, she became the symbol of a protest movement against the lack of investigation into the attacks on activists.
