Tass.ru: Eurasian Economic Union and Serbia to Sign Free Trade Agreement in October

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will visit Belgrade in October, and part of the visit is to sign an agreement on the implementation of sanitary and phytosanitary measures on imports of Serbian fruits into Russia.

At the “Golden Autumn” exhibition in Moscow, the Russian Prime Minister examined a stand with Serbian fruits.

“In ten days, when you will officially be in Belgrade, God forbid, we will sign the agreement on phytosanitary measures,” said Serbian Agriculture Minister Branislav Nedimovic, pointing to Medvedev with Serbian fruits – apples, pears, nectarines and plums, of which also brandy is made.

“And we’ll drink some brandy on the occasion,” Medvedev replied with a smile.

The Serbian minister said that in late October his country would sign a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, which would include the free sale of brandy in EEU countries.

BA Comment

The signing of the agreement between Serbia and the Eurasian Economic Community will not be of particular economic importance as an effect on bilateral trade, as Serbia and Russia trade on lighter terms and the markets of other EEU countries are not that significant for Serbia’s exports.

This agreement is subject to the EU accession agreement, and will be terminated at the time of the country’s joining the Union.

Signing the agreement is used to the fullest extent by Russian propaganda as an example of developing a “balanced” relationship between West and East by Belgrade. The truth is that the trade turnover of Serbia and Russia is not very dynamic, although it has exceeded $ 1 billion.
