Those who follow this blog know that for at least three years I have been saying without fail that German energy policy, known as the Energiewende (energy transition), is a disaster doomed to fail sooner or later. Not so the German mainstream press, which much like the American one, is firmly in the hands of leftists that have been religiously singing the praises of the Energiewende  as a model for all humanity to follow. First and foremost, among them has been the popular weekly, Der Spiegel, that has also profiled itself as  viciously anti-American to the point of making up fake news to paint America as evil incarnate (Claas Relotius). What was my surprise then when on a flight from Washington to Vienna last

The article first published in instituteforenergyresearch.org on 12/14/2018.   The democrats’ latest promise to fuel America’s economy from “100% percent clean, renewable, zero-emission” sources and do so within a decade, while eliminating “systemic injustice,” sounds very much like the perennial Soviet promises that communism was just around the corner. And the communist tenor of these promises is unmistakable. For apart from ridding the world of CO2 emissions, the Green New Deal’s promoters also promise national i.e. government, health care, government job guarantees, upgrading all buildings in the country to green standards and high-speed trains to replace air travel. The only doubts these wild-eyed socialists seem to have is that they are “not sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast,” as their, in the

The Canadian Climate Leadership Council recently proposed a plan that was supported by 27 Nobel laureates in economics and other business dignitaries, calling for the introduction of a national carbon tax starting at $40 per ton of carbon dioxide. The base argumentation used was primarily economic efficiency and climate fatalism. The underlying logic seemed closer to abstract academic theory than sound economic reasoning. More has been happening recently, with an obvious reference being made to Brexit, as politicians tend to lead the public without a clear understanding of the costs and consequences, jumping into reckless actions while lacking trustworthy and elaborate impact assessments and risk analyses.   Canada is one of the zealot countries, diehard supportive of climate change policies and the Paris accords. Ottawa has been on the

We live in a world of post-truth. Everyone has his own “facts,” his own truth. After the annexation of Crimea, Russia annexed the ‘truth’ for the Russian public and proxies around the world. Adding the Crimean Peninsula meant new borders, new territorial waters and new conflicts. Closing the Kerch Strait by building the bridge connecting continental Russia with its new territory meant that large ships are disallowed, effectively imposing illegal control of traffic, blocking access to and from the Ukrainian coast of the Sea of Azov, including the towns of Mariupol and Berdyansk. The EU and U.S. are looking closely and pondering how to respond – from a safe distance, as usual. They will not interfere – except with sedative lecturing.   Chancellor Merkel cherishes Nord Stream-2 more than Ukraine as a shield of

The article first published in americanthinker.com on 11/29/2018.     When European 21st century history is written, the picture above will be considered as emblematic of its times as the one of Chamberlain waving his ‘peace in our time’ piece of paper in 1938. And it may be even more damning, because while they were a few isolated criticisms of the abject cow-towing of democratic politicians to the monstrous Hitler regime in 1938, not a voice of disapproval to the blatant pandering by Merkel and Macron to the evil dictatorships of Putin and Erdogan was heard from either Brussels or the mainstream press in Europe. Instead, Macron and Merkel called shortly after their late October meeting in Istanbul with Erdoğan and Putin for an E.U. army to defend Europe from the United States, while

The article first published in americanthinker.com on 11/13/2018.   Two seemingly unrelated events in Europe over the past 20 days point to what cannot be described other than as the slow suicide of  European civilization. On November 9, Chancellor Merkel gave a speech in Berlin commemorating the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht (lately renamed  Pogromnacht). This 1938 event, which led to the willful destruction of 1400 synagogues, thousands of Jewish stores and the deportation of more than 30,000 Jews to the concentration camps, is widely considered the beginning of the Holocaust. For those familiar with Nazi history, though, the writing had been on the wall long before that.   What Hitler had in mind for the Jews is described in detail in his Mein Kampf and put in practice at the latest by the Nuremberg Laws of September

The news that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has bent under Trump’s pressure, deciding to spend government funds on the construction of the first German terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas, has traversed the newswire of most international news agencies.   Interpretations of Merkel’s move have framed it as an attempt to avoid Washington’s sanctions against Nord Stream-2.   Geostrategic bargains are part of Merkel’s move, but possibly not the core truth behind it.   The fact of the matter is that it is odd for the largest EU economy and largest gas consumer in the EU not to have access via import terminals to the global LNG market. In the face of growing dependence on Russian pipeline gas, this self-imposed restraint can hardly constitute a sensible policy.

‘Fort Trump’ said the Polish president Andrzej Duda, during a White House press conference last week, would be an appropriate name to call the first American military base in Poland. Whether this Polish dream comes to pass or not is yet to be seen, but the strategic rationale behind it is anything but the joke US pundits took it to be.  It is, in fact, an incapsulation of the dilemma facing Eastern Europe and with it, NATO and the United States.   For barely concealed behind it is a multitude of challenges that must be addressed without delay if a serious crisis in Europe and the alliance is to be avoided. At the bottom of it is the seemingly unavoidable conflict over Muslim immigration. Virtually all of Eastern Europe
